. megan mcgrath is at the ellipse with a preview of the big ceremony. >> you can see the tree over my shoulder here. it's all decorateding the lights are on, but of course it hasn't been lit yet. they won't be doing that until shortly after 5:00 tonight. this is the 90th annual lighting of the christmas tree, a tradition that was started in 1903. the video that you're seeing here, this was actually from last year's tree lighting. this year, though, folks can expect a few different things. we've got a couple changes here. first of all, the stage has been changed and the location of the stage has been changed as well. they basically shifted it 90 degrees. so you've got this really pretty backdrop now. you've got the tree immediately to the left of the stage and then to the left of that, you have the white house itself, which of course during the time of the big event tonight will be all lit up. so very beautiful backdrop here. also, the host this year is actor neil patrick harris. and we've got a star-studded lineup. what can we expect in terms of musical performances? take a listen. >>
about. fans are celebrating what could be a magical run in the post season. newses 4's megan mcgrath has more. >> what a game it was. it's the talk of the town. take a look at the headline. playoffs. another one here. riding rookies to the playoffs. it was definitely a night for the rookies. did a phenomenal job. a night for the fans. a sweet victory over a huge rival, dallas. now the fans are waiting for what's next. all high fives and smiles for redskins fans this morning. at the green belt metro they are still celebrating. ♪ hail victory >> playoffs! >> love this so much. rg-iii. special teams. everyone came to play. >> it is a daunting task. the redskins did it winning seven straight games to become the division champion. making it all the sweeter. the fact that they beat dallas and that prompted a few victory dances. >> i really enjoyed that game. the way they came back and spanked the cowboys. >> i talked to the tv first. i said, if i stay up, you guys better win. i stayed up the whole time. it was me. i helped them. i was the # 12th man from my living room. >> nothing but praise
. news 4's megan mcgrath has been talking to fans all morning. she's live in green belt. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morning, richard. a lot of excited fans here at this metro station. you got to consider that this season did not get off to the greatest start. but then the redskins started to turn things around and then yesterday they won their seventh in a row clinching the nfc east title. the first time since 1999. of course, making it all the sweeter is that this victory was over arch-rival dallas. talking to folks at the green belt metro station, you can imagine they're over the moon and they have high expectations. >> i thought it was a great game. i was a little bit surprised rg3 didn't seem as mobile as he normally was. morris had 200-yard day. it was a great day for a great rookie. >> i love it. rg3 is phenomenal. he's phenomenal. he was the missing piece in -- more than the missing piece. he was just great. >> it was a fantastic game last night. morris did his thing. rg3 did his thing. >> extremely well, yeah. definitely they will win the super bowl. i wish them al

of volunteers brought gifts and helped wrapped. including 14-year-old megan who came up with a novel holiday gift giving plan. >> i thought it would be a great idea to give back to the community and donate gifts instead. >> reporter: you don't want anything? >> nope. >> reporter: not one thing? megan, a tenth grader says she wasn't sure at first which children she wanted to help. her mom suggested the safe shores nonprofit and they gave her a wish list. >> i received a wish list for also what i thought was really funny. a 14-year-old girl. i thought it would be like getting a gift for me rfrnlts some lucky girl will be getting a kindle fire. >> i enjoy kids and i want other kids to enjoy what i experienced as a kid. >> reporter: her father is proud. >> it affirms the value we've tried to instill in the kids and the values of the educational expierces they've had. >> reporter: her brother thinks it's kill. >> it's nice what she's doing for the shelter. it's kind of inspired me maybe next year i can do something like this and sponsor another kid. >> reporter: the gifts will be given to social

christmas tree. this year's event included several star-studded acts. megan now with a preview of the big event. >> reporter: this is the 90th annual lighting of the christmas tree. this started in 1923 with calvin coolidge and that tradition continuing today, with lots of things that are new this year. you see the stage brand-new. the orientation of the stage is new as well. it's got kind of an interesting perspective. you see the tree to the left of the stage, and then you also see the white house. they switched things up a little bit. we also have a new tree this year. i'm joined by scott tucker with the national park service. talk about the tree itself. because that's the highlight of this event. what happened? we have a new tree. >> we do have a new tree. back in president's day weekend of 2011, the wind storm came through d.c. and snapped the tree that was planted in 1978. we transplanted a new tree because the national christmas tree is a live, living tree. we transplanted in one in march of 2011. that one didn't make it. and so this year, roughly a month ago, october of this year,
